I'm In Pain

This is simply a list of "guidelines" to get through a short amount of time with pain. This is in no way meant to take the place of medical or dental treatment. At anytime if the pain, swelling, or bleeding would be on going or symptoms would become worse, your best option is always to go to the dentist or Emergency Room for evaluation.

Swelling, Bleeding or Severe Pain

Visit your dentist or Emergency Room for evaluation as soon as possible.

Pain From a Recent Extraction

Take Ibuprofen as directed on the bottle.

Wet a cotton ball with oil of cloves, it can be found at the drug store, and put on the extraction site for 10 minutes as needed.

If you are still bleeding after a recent extraction, gently bite on a warm, damp tea bag to stop the bleeding. If this doesn't work after 2 attempts and there is excessive bleeding, visit your dentist or the Emergency Room.

Avoid drinking through a straw

Avoid smoking or using smokeless tobacco for 3 days minimum

Avoid drinking alcohol, hot liquids, and carbonated beverages

Moderate Toothache and/or Slight Swelling

Take Ibuprofen or Extra Strength Tylenol as needed

Apply a cold compress on outside for 20 minutes on and 20 minutes off as needed

Use very warm salt water rinse as often as possible

Visit a dentist right away

Sedation

If you have recently been sedated it is important to stay hydrated. It is recommended that the sedated patient drinks on 8 oz. glass of water every hour during the day the patient is under the influence of the sedation.

If a Temporary Crown Comes Off

Put toothpaste in the crown and replace if it is not sensitive. If it is sensitive it is okay to leave the temporary off until you can see the dentist.

Dentures

If your dentures are broken, there is not any glue that is approved to be put into your mouth.

It would be strongly recommended to have the denture fixed as soon as possible.

Please allow your dentist to repair the prosthesis for the very best result.

Tooth Knocked Out

For children or adults if a tooth is knocked out, put the tooth in milk and visit your dentist or the Emergency Room for implantation within 45 minutes. DO NOT WASH OR SCRUB TOOTH WITH TOOTHBRUSH OR ANY DEVICE AND DO NOT TRY TO IMPLANT ON YOUR OWN.

This is by no means meant to supersede what your own dentist may have instructed you to do. If at any time the pain, swelling, or bleeding would be on going or symptoms would worsen, your best option is your dentist or the Emergency Room for evaluation.
